Combat Battle Bot

RumbleBots is a modular battle bot toy system that grew out of my exploration into combat robotics. What began as an attempt to build a competition-ready robot gradually shifted into something more meaningful — understanding how complex mechanical systems can be simplified into engaging, interactive products. The project reflects a transition from performance-driven engineering to user-centered design, where the focus moved from building a powerful machine to creating something people can build, modify, and play with.

Combat robotics often focuses heavily on engineering performance but lacks strong conceptual identity and behavioral design. Most student-built battle bots are functional but lack intention, strategy, and character. The challenge was to design a robot that goes beyond movement and mechanism a system that embodies a clear behavioral philosophy, combining engineering with storytelling.

solution

RHINO was designed as a behavior-driven combat bot, inspired by the attack patterns of a rhinoceros — aggressive, forward-driven, and impact-focused. The system integrates: A spinning horn weapon for high-impact strikes Differential drive system for controlled maneuverability Wireless communication using ESP-NOW for low-latency control A modular chassis designed for iterative material upgrades Rather than treating components separately, the project focuses on full system integration, where electronics, mechanics, and control logic work together seamlessly.

RHINO began as a simple idea — what if a machine could behave like an animal?

Instead of designing a robot from components, the process started with understanding aggression in nature. The rhinoceros became the central inspiration — not just for form, but for movement, intent, and combat strategy.

The project evolved through multiple stages:

  • Initial concept sketches and behavior mapping

  • Electronics prototyping and communication testing

  • Motor and control system validation

  • Fabrication using MDF as a prototype material

  • Iterative integration into a working combat bot

Over time, RHINO transformed from a mechanical assembly into a cohesive system with personality, where every design decision supports its identity as a powerful, forward-attacking machine.
